Photography Trivia – Do You Know The Answer?

Who invented the camera?
The forerunner to the camera was the camera obscura, which was an instrument consisting of a darkened chamber or box, into which light was admitted through a convex lens, forming an image of external objects on a old slr camera surface of paper or glass. The camera obscura was described by an Arabic scientist in his Book of Optics, written in the early 11th century.

The first camera that was small and portable enough to make photography practical was built by Johann Zahn in 1685, though it took another 150 years for the technology to be used regularly.

When was film first invented?
Eastman invented a flexible, paper based photographic film in 1884. In 1888, Eastman patented the Kodak roll film camera.

Kodachrome – A Film Retired But Not Forgotten

June 22, 2009 become the end of a long journey for Kodak’s Kodachrome. For over 74 years, Kodak manufactured this color reversal film which has been used by photojournalists all over the world to capture amazing images. One of the most famous images was from National Geographic photographer Steve McCurry, a haunting portrait of an Afghan refugee appeared on the cover of the magazine in June 1985

Kodachrome was such an amazing film for the time because of the vibrant colors it portrayed. In the words of Paul Simon:

They give us those nice bright colors
They give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world’s a sunny day, Oh yeah
I got a Nikon camera
I love to take a photograph
So mama don’t take my Kodachrome away.

Photography Survey – How Do You Match Up?

I love surveys and statistics. I love discovering how people are thinking, what matters most to them, and what drives them for the future.

So a few days I found a new survey tool and decided to give it a try – and thanks to the dozens of you who have participated so far (yes, you can still add your ideas if you have two minutes to spare).

So let’s go over a couple of the survey results.

post 052709

Is taking a great picture more of an accident for you, or can you take an image knowing you’ve got a great image every time? A lot of that comes down to lighting, and knowing exactly what to do in every situation. And it looks like a ton of photographers struggle with that on a daily basis.

A Common Theme – Taking A Photo One Moment In Time

I’m seeing a common theme throughout the web lately. It’s about documenting one moment in time through the eyes of as many photographers as possible.

I first wrote about the 4am Project earlier this year.

worldwide moment

Now I’ve just run across Worldwide Moment. Worldwide Moment will take place on 09.09.09 at 09:09. The idea is for everyone to capture one moment of peace simultaneously from around the world, and share that image that was taken in celebration of this event.

What does your world look like at that moment?

If you want to participate, you can join in many ways.

Twitter
Facebook

And if you want to start early, start with a mini-moment, that will post photos leading up to the big day. Email [email protected] with your photo, and it will be uploaded to the Flickr page.

A Cold Snowy Morning at 4am

What does your world look like at 4am?

We were intrigued by the 4am Project, and had to participate. So this morning we set our alarm for 3:45, and headed out to photograph.

We live right by the Cherry Creek Reservoir, and walk, bike, hike, and boat there all the time. So that’s the first place we thought of at 4 am. Especially with it being cold and blowing snow.

This is our view, and the path we start out on almost every day. The city lights of other neighborhoods and shopping is several miles in the distance; but its amazing at how much light there really is at 4 am.

What does your world look like at 4am? I’d love to see your photos; just post links in our comments.
