Are you stuck in your photography business? Are clients just not coming through your door as fast as you wish? Or maybe the right clients aren’t coming through the door – they want the world for $1. What should you do next?
It isn’t your prospects and clients that have a problem; it’s you. If your business isn’t where you want it to be, it’s because you aren’t marketing it in the correct manner. And if that’s the case, you’re probably making one of these mistakes.
Mistake #1 – Expecting online tools to effortlessly generate traffic
“Put up a website and they will come.”
“Open a Facebook account and I’ll have all the clients I need.”
There’s something about the online world that has people believing in miracles. So they build a free site on a web builder program and sit back and wait. Then they hear about the billions on Facebook and decide that’s the solution. So they set up a page there too.
Then they sit back and wait. And wait. And wait.
The problem is in thinking the web is a magical place where all your dreams come true. It’s not. And it won’t.
The Internet is simply a marketing tool. You have to work at it each day, just like you have to with non-web based marketing as well.
If you send out postcards, you can’t send out 1,000 cards one day and expect your business to be around 25 years from now. You would have to send out 1,000 cards day after day, month after month, year after year, in order to keep bringing in the right customers at the right time.
And if you’re going to market online, you have to do something every day until the end of your business. You must write blog posts day after day. You must be active on Facebook week after week. You must strive to gain followers month after month, and keep them happy year after year.
Mistake #2 – Over think and under plan
The problem with most business owners is they live in a “tomorrow” world.
- Tomorrow I’ll finish this ad.
- Tomorrow I’ll write a blog post.
- I’ll learn about that tomorrow.
I hate to tell you but tomorrow will never get hear. Instead of thinking and planning about all you’ll do “tomorrow”, do something that will allow you to accomplish it today. That’s where a plan comes in. If you tell yourself you will have something done by Friday, you plan for it, you work towards it, you hold yourself accountable for it, you’ll do it.
Mistake #3 – Plenty of traffic doesn’t equate to plenty of customers
People visit your site every day. You have a lot of people following you on Facebook. Your stats are looking great. You now have just one problem: no sales. How can that be?
Anyone can have instant traffic any time. I can by 5,000 friends for my Facebook feed for just a few dollars. I can use Google’s Pay Per Click and have traffic coming anywhere I choose almost instantly. The problem lies with what they do when they get there.
Hoards of meat eaters aren’t going to love a vegetarian site. You’re bringing in the wrong types of clients that have very little interest when they get there.
Waves of potential clients won’t know what to do if you don’t have your expectations stated clearly on your site. Do you explicitly tell people what to do next?

It might sound simple, but you have to stay simple online. Don’t leave anything to chance. Take every visitor by the hand and lead them to what you want to do next. You can even have a “start here” page prominently on your site so new people know exactly what to do.
Don’t worry, you won’t offend. In fact, you’ll probably end up with more qualified traffic, more connections, more relationships, and more sales overall.
