How To Boost Your Photography Business With Pinterest

It was bound to happen sooner or later. Facebook and Twitter have been the social phenomena for many months now, so eventually some other site had to come along and see what they could do to gain traction.

It may be with a site called Pinterest. Pinterest is a social site that calls themselves a virtual pinboard. It allows you to organize and share all of the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, organize their wardrobe/closet, and find favorite recipes. Yep, if that sounds like a place the female population would love, you’re right. Its heavily weighted towards female users who love sharing and commenting on everything fun.

While Pinterest is simply a pinboard, meaning there is no true way of selling or getting people to buy your products, it is a popular way to showcase images with links back to the original source.

If you haven’t had a chance to check out Pinterest yet, now is the time. Use these ideas to set up and draw attention to your photography.

Spend the time

Pinterest is just like the other social sites in use today – you get out of it what you put into it. Find the movers and shakers of Pinterest and build relationships with those who are known for quality “pins”. Once they recognize you, they are more likely to post about your photography.

Keep it simple

The reason Pinterest is moving up the charts is it is easy to use. Everyone has a board where they pin images in the same sizes. A clean uncluttered look is best. Each pinned photo includes one link back to your site, which can help boost the page views back to your site once you are recognized.

Connect the pieces

Just like you have a Facebook and Twitter button on your website, consider promoting Pinterest on your other sites as well. For those that have never heard of it, you’ll be introducing them to a new technology they many love. And for those that already love it, they’ll know how to use it.

Make sure your business is a match

Again, the general demographics here are women wanting to share ideas in the home, fashion, décor and recipe areas. This is a perfect place for things like weddings, babies portraits – photography in general is a good fit because of its graphic nature. Make sure you understand who you are promoting to and what you hope to accomplish before you begin.

Think of more than yourself

If you’ve found success on places like Facebook and Twitter, you understand its not all about you. You can’t post your information over and over again and get results from followers. They are looking for tips, news tidbits, resources from other companies – and occasionally your own stuff. Pinterest is no different. The companies that have had the biggest success focus in on what people want within their niche, then provide it over and over again.

Follow the movers and shakers

Like any site, the best way to learn about something new is to follow the “biggies” within the industry. Head to Pinterest and follow people that catch your eye and are active. Learn from them. Mimic their movements. Then take action and give it a try.

And while you’re there, look us up.
