Did you know a business with a plan is twice as likely to succeed as one that doesn’t?

So the next question is, “Do you have a plan?”

It Portrait of smiling business people with thumbs up against white doesn’t have to long and detailed. It doesn’t have to be in a 3 inch thick binder. You don’t have to have all the facts and figures for backing up your plan.

You just have to have a little direction.

Let’s go over 6 steps that will help you build your business plan this afternoon, and will easily help you build a more successful photography business.

1. Buy a binder, notebook or journal. You need to have your goals and plans at easy access, sitting on your desk where you can view them every day.

2. Spend some time visioning where you would like to be in the future. Be as specific as possible. “I want to run my own photography business” isn’t specific. “I want to quit my job and have a full time business by August 1, 2010” is specific.

3. Get out several sheets of paper, or use the first few sheets in your notebook or journal. Create pages for 1 month, 6 months, 1 year and 5 years from now. Again, don’t just write “one month”, write the actual date. So if you are doing this today, you would write September 4, 2009 – One Month Goals at the top of one of your sheets.

4. Take your goals and fit them into the four sheets of paper. Let’s revisit the goal:

“I want to quit my job and have a full time business by August 1, 2010”

This would be one of your one year goals. Now its time to think how to make this a reality.

How much is your current monthly income? This is what you will need to make with your photography in order to make it a reality. If it’s $5,000 a month, you now have a goal with your photography.

What can you do each month to earn that type of income? How many clients do you need? What services can you offer to bring in that type of income?

5. Work between your sheets of paper, and write down each of your goals. As you write certain things, you’ll come up with more. Put it all down. The more your can see what you hope to accomplish, the easier it is to achieve.

6. This is a living, changing document. Re-write your one month goals every month. Add to them over the month. Change them as you need to. The important thing is to have a checklist that allows you to monitor your progress, and gives you something to stay on track with.
