<g:plusone size="medium" count="1" href="http://virtualphotographystudio.com/photographyblog/2011/04/7-tips-for-visual-storytelling/"></g:plusone>

You’re not just a photographer; you capture a story with a visual image.

The better you are at seeing the story unfold before you snap the shutter, the better your final product will be. That’s where the true art form comes into play. Some photographers look beyond the quick image, and look for a way to put a lot of emotion into one image.

If you want to improve your photography, improve your storytelling first.

1. The Who, What, Where, When and Why

The first rule of great storytelling is discovering the facts. Chances are you remember this assignment from your grade school days. Pick out any story in the newspaper, and you should quickly be able to pick out the 5 W’s – who, what, where, when and why. That’s the crux of a great story. It provides the details, and brings the reader in.

The same holds true in photography. What is your ultimate goal with a photograph? Center in on who you are photographing. What message are you trying to convey? Where are you going to capture the image? When will you be working with your subject? Why is this image important to you and to your subject?

2. Beginning, Middle, End

Every great story is complete, and has a beginning, middle and end. In many cases, your photography session should also have a beginning, middle and end. Choose your results ahead of time, and shoot with the end in mind.

For example, if you are photographing a wedding, go in thinking of the final presentation. How will you build an album for the couple? How will you start the album? How will you end it? Make sure you take those images, and set the scene for a great storyline in between.

3. Who is the audience?

Before you head into a shoot, determine who the major players are and what they expect.

A marketing director may hire you for a catalog shoot, yet the president may be the one who makes the final decisions. Do they agree on focus? Do they have the same vision? Try and determine the direction of the shoot before you head in for the day, yet remain flexible in case you have difference of opinions.

4. What does the final product look like?

What is the client coming to you for? If it’s a senior portrait, it may be for one large image to hang on the wall and a yearbook photo.

While they may be coming to you with one idea in mind, you are the expert. What is your ultimate goal for selling? The senior and her family may come in with one large photograph in mind, yet fall in love with the senior album you have lying in your reception room. They may equally love the wallet collage hanging in the sales room. Buy having your vision of what you want to sell, and making it readily available to your customers, you can easily increase your bottom line.

5. What are the essential elements of the story?

You are the photographer. You are the expert. Don’t be afraid to take your photography to the next level.

A new mom may come in for a simple baby portrait. But once she sees your work, and falls in love with a 24 page album that highlights the details – the baby’s fingers around their wedding rings, the baby’s toes, etc – its easy to sell her on the need to capture these memories and retain them for always.

6. Prepare ahead of time.

While much of photography is spontaneous, much of it should be thought about ahead of time. Big box photography studios are mechanical; they take subject after subject, stand them on the X, and shoot the basic images. There is nothing special about these point and shoot images.

Yet as a professional, each image can be thought about and completely set up ahead of time. Ask questions and dig deep into the lives of your clients. What do they love? What makes them unique as a person, and as a family? Then set up your shoot to showcase that information, and make the portrait experience truly unique.

7. Explain how you see the image.

Since you are the storyteller, explain how you see the image along the way. It can start in the initial meeting before you book with a client. Start talking about the vision you shared with other customers, and show examples.

Then when you move to the shoot itself, talk with your clients along the way and explain what you are doing. “You spoke of how your family loves hiking and the great outdoors, so I want to capture that essence in your family’s portrait.” You are setting the stage for the final results.

Then when your client sees the images for the first time, let them relish in what you’ve created. Slideshows to music are great because it sets the stage for emotion. Then explain how you see the final product, and the reason you photographed what you did. You may open up their minds to new ideas – and create more sales along the way.

Think about the images you’ve seen grace the covers of magazines like National Geographic. They can be truly breathtaking, and leave you in awe of what that part of the world must be like.

While that type of photography isn’t for everyone, you have to admire those that choose that type of lifestyle.

Focus For Humanity is an organization that offers grants and awards to photographers that choose to make this a lifestyle. Their mission is to provide financial support, resources and training for professional and amateur photographers who capture stories of shared humanity and support their work with various non-governmental organizations throughout the world.

Start by looking through the recent winners – the images there are inspiring. Then check out some of the other areas, they provide detailed information on grants, awards and mentoring.

Starting in April, they will be offering a mentorship program in which they will help you get started in this line of photography. Because expertise and guidance is what can help you achieve your goals in a much quicker fashion, their mentorship program pairs you up with someone who’s in the field and living this lifestyle.

Focus For Humanity subscribes to the guidelines of another organization, International Guild of Visual Peacemakers, which is also worth checking out. Their goal is to display common humanity and images that build bridges of peace. They also provide a wide variety of photo tours and workshops throughout the world.

<g:plusone size="medium" count="1" href="http://virtualphotographystudio.com/photographyblog/2010/11/ways-to-control-the-wedding-a-photographers-guide-to-becoming-a-wedding-planner/"></g:plusone>

Over the years, we’ve photographed hundreds of weddings. And when it comes to planning the wedding, there are two kinds of brides.

Cinderella – the type who takes control over every detail, planning day and night until the big event.

The Queen – She’s busy and relies on others to plan for her. She puts in her requests and lets a planner narrow down the choices. Then she makes final decisions.

Cinderella

Because Cinderella brides don’t rely on a planner, they go into their wedding day with high expectations and little direction. Because they’ve never put on a wedding before, they don’t have any idea how long an event should last, or how to structure the individual pieces of the day to make it run smoothly. In essence, they are lost the entire day, letting people control them as they move along.

With a Cinderella bride, you have to step in immediately, or risk being at the event many hours that day.

The easiest way to control a Cinderella bride is to gently make suggestions. Explain that you have photographed dozens or hundreds of brides, and know how to keep guests happy. Never put it back on her – tell her you know how to keep the party moving and exciting for each of her guests. She’ll quickly rely on you as the planner.

Then make suggestions.

“Do you want formal portraits before or after the ceremony? Portraits typically take 20 to 30 minutes, so if you want more time with your guests, before is probably better.”

“Shall we cut the cake right after dinner? Then your guests can be served while you enjoy your first dance.”

The key is good communication. Never force a situation; make the bride feel like she made the choices.

Another key way to keep control is to work with the other vendors. Talk with the caterer – when will they be ready to cut the cake for the guests? Talk with the DJ or band – what order are the songs in for important dances?

If you know the order and can work together with the other vendors, you’ll all have a smoother event, and watch out for each other along the way.

The Queen

In most cases, the Queen will rely on a wedding planner. The wedding planner does this every day, and has her own agenda planned out.

Because a wedding planner uses vendors she refers, chances are you’ll see the same vendors again and again. It’s important to build a strong relationship from the start. Chat with the planner before the event, and start building the relationship. See if she can email you a schedule so you know her timetables. Always go up to the planner at the beginning, and check in with her about switches and changes. She will be the most important person at the wedding – keep her happy and you’ll ensure a future of referrals.

Okay, from a working standpoint, the planner is the most important person. But in reality, it’s always about the bride. The Queen will be confident in the way she moves and what she does. Queens are used to big parties, nights on the town, and a great event that she can enjoy. She relies on the planner to set the order of things, but she won’t take direction. She does what she wants within the parameters set up by the planner.

While it’s easy to sneak a Cinderella out for photo shoots – she loves being the center of attention, Queens enjoy the party. They don’t want it to be all about them, and they enjoy being with their guests. They acknowledge and respect you – just don’t waste their time.

While catering to both Cinderellas and Queens can be a lucrative business model, you’ll probably be more comfortable working for one or the other. We loved the Queens, and loved photojournalism that came along with this type of clientele. We’ve also known photographers that moved up into the Queen environment, hated it, and went back to working with Cinderellas. Cinderellas need more hand holding, and need more interaction from you. If you like posing, customer contact and hand holding, Cinderellas are perfect for you.

Because photographers are the one vendor that spends the entire day with a client, we automatically fall into the role of wedding planner (if the client doesn’t hire one). Realizing this and taking on the role gracefully will help you become a great photographer – one who is referred again and again.

As a photographer, being able to sell your photographs at the right price is equally important.

If you love photojournalism, and love finding the story as it happens, check out Demotix. Demotix allows you to take photographs, showcase them to the media, and make money.

Demotix has connections to major media buyers all over the world. From newspapers, magazines, television and websites, if the media needs a photograph, Demotix has a connection.

One of the major concerns with all photographers is copyrights. With Demotix, you retain your copyright. They sell your image either with non-exclusive rights for anything between $50 and $3000 USD. Or for exclusive rights for the highest price possible. In all cases, they split the fee with you 50/50.

Demotix is still fairly small, with 8300 members in 110 countries. Which means it’s a great time to climb on board and find your niche in photojournalism.

For many photographers, its simply snapping a candid of guests at the party, or of kids playing on the dance floor.

Photojournalism is so much more. It’s capturing the essence of the day through photography. It’s capturing emotion. It’s photographing something that tells a complete story within the image itself.

The easiest way to get more creative – become more photojournalistic – is to give yourself assignments. Spend just 2 minutes at each of these 7 items at your next wedding, and you are sure to see a difference in your photography.

1. Shoot from another camera’s perspective.

2. Look for action/reaction. Shoot the main action, then flip around 180 degrees and get the reaction to the main action.

3. Capture the details of the location. Photograph city signs, reception site signs, gardens, skylines, views – anything that makes the location unique.

4. Accessories – look for purses hanging over chairs, jackets draped over arms, or shoes left by the dance floor.

5. Shoot from different angles. Climb up into a balcony. Lay down on the floor. Find new viewpoints to add a flare to your images.

6. Capture the detail. Do they have a band? Capture close ups of each of the instruments. A sit down dinner? Capture various images of the food.

7. Focus on one item. Start with a wine glass – how creative can you be? Capture it in someone’s hand, on the table, grouped together, and standing alone.

<g:plusone size="medium" count="1" href="http://virtualphotographystudio.com/photographyblog/2009/09/7-ways-to-be-more-creative-at-your-next-wedding/"></g:plusone>

The for-profit side, where we become photographers to capture images for clients. And the photojournalistic side where people become photographers to tell a story.

Andrew and I fall into the first category, and have made our living traveling to where our clients fly us. We love sharing in the dreams, the hopes, and the fun of some extraordinary people.

But part of me has always been mesmerized by a photojournalist – out in intense situations bringing back photographs that truly do speak 1,000 words.

Check out James Nachtwey’s amazing new photographs for XDRTB.
