One of the newest products released from Apple is the new iBooks Author application. iBooks Author allows anyone to create beautiful multi-touch books for iPad. And its not just the “book” concept that makes this exciting. With iBooks, you can incorporate a whole lot more than text – galleries, video, interactive diagrams, 3D objects and more. Which means you can bring your entire business to life that we couldn’t even dream about a few short months ago.

When iPad was first released, I attended a workshop on how best to use iPad. And even though there were several experts from Apple doing the presentation, the one thing they left open was the true purpose of an iPad. While it was developed with specific things in mind, the “brains” behind the iPad also knew that they really had no idea what direction iPad would take. With collective minds from all over the world developing apps to run on an iPad, the future is being rewritten every single day.

Start by taking a tour of the iBooks Author platform.

In many ways we are seeing that today as a consumer-driven iPad is quickly moving into the business space. Businesses and photographers are using it for everything from taking notes and communication platforms, to marketing and eventually replacing the need for hauling around heavy laptops.

With the release of iBooks Author, you can now take it one step further and incorporate a multimedia presentation into everything you do. Here are 7 ideas that will completely change the way you manage your business – and how people view you as a photographer and a business owner.

1. An interactive brochure

A brochure you can hand out is great. A brochure you can have people download to their iPad is revolutionary. Not only can you showcase your images in a unique way, you can also incorporate a viariety of other ideas into your brochures. How about a 2 minute interview with you? Or a video showing how you photograph at an event? If people can see what you do and learn from you, they are more likely to be inspired by you.

2. Your very own published book

Ever dream of publishing your own book? Why not create your very own iPad book? Last week I showcased how one photographer took his dream of traveling by motorcycle from LA to the far reaches of South America, and turned it into a unique iPad experience that he is now profiting from. While an app is one way of publishing your content, creating your very own iBook gives you a whole different set of tools to create something that allows you to live life on your terms.

While many people now are starting their ideas from scratch, you can start with pre-existing templates already for your designs – try iBook Author Templates and Book Palette by Jumsoft. Then grow from there.

3. An add-on to a client sale

Customers today want access to their image files so they can print and do anything they want with them. And while an image file is just a file, if you turn it into something creative, you will become the next “hot” photographer people have to do business with. Instead of handing over the files, create an interactive iBook that tells a story, includes photographs, and maybe even incorporates motion and video along the way. Start small and build – you’ll quickly find ways you can add three and four figures to every package your customers buy.

4. A creative newsletter

One of the ways we grew our business into a Six Figure Photography business in under two years was with a creative newsletter we mailed out quarterly. We mailed this not only to our clients and prospects, but to our vendor referrals as well. Why not create an interactive quarterly newsletter your vendors, clients and referral sources can show off on their iPads? It’s a great way of sharing just about everything with the people that matter most.

5. A training piece for client sessions

Don’t you hate when a client shows up with the wrong outfit choices, or without the agreed upon props? You can avoid that by creating a simple client training iBook that will walk a client through exactly how to get ready for their portrait session.

6. A vendor referral piece

Who is your best referral source? Chances are its someone you work with again and again – a wedding coordinator for instance. Now you can customize an iBook especially for each vendor source, include photos and videos from clients you worked together, and give them a variety of ways to help promote themselves – and of course you too.

7. An employee training manual

Are you hiring people to work with you? In today’s world, hiring someone may not mean they come to your “office” each day – they may live half way around the world. With text, graphics and video, show them exactly what to do to help you build your business. You can use video support programs to show them how you like each image edited, or showcase how you like your albums to be created. Build it into an employee manual that can be passed from employee to employee as your business grows.
