The True Value Of A Client

So you are a wedding and portrait photographer. How much value does one new person bring to your business?

When you add that all up, it comes to $24,500. So if you are just opening up a photography studio today, and plan to be in business 25 years from now, this strategy is more than doable. In fact, it’s the best way to plan out your marketing strategy.

And if you know a client has the potential of bringing in $24,500 over the next 25 years, how much would you pay to market to them and bring them in? How much would you give to keep them happy?

clientexperience@todaysgrowthconsultant.com' About Virtual Photography

We're the co-founders of VirtualPhotographyStudio.com and have been writing on this blog since 2004. We started Virtual as a way to help photographers stretch beyond a part time income, and develop strategies to become a Five Figure Photographer or a Six Figure Photographer. Ultimately its all about lifestyle, and if your goal is to live as a photographer 24/7, we think you should have the knowledge and the tools to do so. Welcome!

You’re selling a fantasy. Take away the quarterly portraits in the first year because the family won’t have the time/money to do them. Ditto on the second child. Figure Mom will get a camera by the time the first child can walk and they’ll consider that savings on your fees, so nix the rest. $1500 for Senior portrait? Where are you working? Beverly Hills. Another fantasy. If you’re good at weddings then become GREAT at weddings and stick to it and market yourself as a WEDDING SPECIALIST. People (straight AND gay!) will always be getting married and they can’t shoot their own wedding photos (well, not very well anyway)

Thanks for your interesting take on things Mark. However, I know a lot of photographers around the world that are shooting at the level I state here – and above. We have one friend that has a baby plan in place, and brings a client in 4 times the first year. They have a couple of hundred families every year, and average over $2,000 per session. They also do a lot of maternity sessions (which I didn’t add in), and follow it up with families throughout the years. And they do well with the second, third and fourth child as well. I also didn’t add in a host of other things – inflation, other events such as bar/bat mitzvah’s, parties, sports, school images, etc.

Do I think this is all possible? Definitely, that’s why I put it in. The main thing is to remember you have to be different. If you are giving average images, a mom can take them herself. But if you wow her with your talent and your customer service skills, she’ll be a customer for life.
